DETOXING AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

If you're a little heavier than you were before the holidays, don't panic. You don't have to starve yourself or go on an extreme cleanse to get back to normal. Here are four HEALTHY ways to detox after the holidays.

* Avoid Sugar and Salt. If you're still feeling bloated, go easy on sugar and salt for at least three days, and avoid refined carbs like pasta, white rice, and white bread.

* Eat More Fruits and Vegetables Than Normal. Doctors typically suggest eating at least five servings of each every single day. And if you've been eating junk for the last month, you need to step it up.

*Increase your intake of the healthy stuff to between seven and 12 servings. It'll help you get all the vitamins and minerals that aren't in chocolate, eggnog, and mashed potatoes.

* Start Off Slowly at the Gym. Take it easy for the first week. If you're gung-ho on day one, you'll overdo it and end up being too sore to go back the next day. A lot of people make this mistake and then NEVER go back.

* Drink Plenty of Water. It's the fastest way to start feeling healthier because water flushes out the toxins in your body. Divide your body weight by two, then drink that many ounces of water a day.

GIFTS YOU SHOULD GIVE YOUR SPOUSE ALL YEAR

1. The Gift of a Listening Ear. Don't jump to conclusions. Don't finish sentences before your spouse is done speaking. Open the ears and close the mouth.

2. The Gift of Engaging. We are a generation always connected, or always on the go. Disengage with your technology and engage with one another. Pick a night, a day, a weekend, a week, where the only gadgets you play with are each other.

3. The Gift of Time. This is related to engaging. If you are two people who seem to only pass in the hallway and exchange scheduling of who is taking the kid where, perhaps you should schedule the time to spend with one another. My wife and I have started a weekly lunch date. It's been awesome. Tie? iPad? No Thanks.

4. The Gift of Grace. We tend to be hardest on those we are closest to and the one we share our life with—our spouse. We become numb to who they are, the newness of our relationship is no longer present, and we feel that we can say and do anything, because the only egg shells we have are "The ones he left in the sink this morning, why didn't he put them in the trash?!" Instead of jumping on them immediately, give them grace. Be gentle in your approach and see what happens.

5. The Gift of Touch. Not sexual touch, though it may lead there eventually. Just regular touches through the day. Find opportunities to hold hands, touch a shoulder or the small of the back. Kiss more often—if just little pecks.

6. The Gift of a Smile. When you are at that Christmas party, and you catch the eye of your spouse, give them a smile. Then, remember that feeling throughout the year. Practice the smile often.

DOES STRESS MAKE U BITCHY?

FROM COSMO: This time of year can try even the sweetest chick's patience — what with crowded stores, too many parties (and hangovers), and annoying family demands — and experts are saying this month will be a "perfect storm" of stress because of financial worries on top of everything else. Here are some strategies for keeping cool:

1. Schedule tasks that are making you anxious — like buying a dress for a party or finishing a tough work assignment — for early in the day. If you leave them for later, you'll spend more time worrying and end up snapping at people.

2. Take a coffee break with friends or coworkers rather than going solo. A study found that getting a caffeine fix in a group lowered stress levels. But sipping coffee alone left people feeling more stressed.

3. Bookmark these sites: CollegeHumor.com and FunnyorDie.com. According to one study, anticipating watching a funny video can reduce stress hormones by up to 70 percent.

4. Practice saying the word no. Women, being social creatures, tend to feel obligated to show up for everything they're invited to. But saying yes to something when you don't really want to go leaves you bitter and annoyed. Tell people you're prepping for a presentation, then enjoy the free time.

5. Make a budget for gifts, going out, and travel. It's a drag to do and you may not stick to it, but feeling in control of your finances helps squash anxiety.

6. Lock lips with your guy. Psychologists found that even just a little bit of physical contact is enough to lower your blood pressure and make you feel calmer.

7. Do short, high-intensity workouts. Research found they have a greater effect on stress than slower-paced exercise does. So instead of an hour of yoga, hit the treadmill on high for 20 minutes.

8. Or if you're feeling too beat to work out, skip the treadmill and relax in the sauna at your gym (or take a steamy shower). A study found that pampering yourself — even for a few minutes — calms you down.

9. If you feel ready to snap — at the rude cashier or airline clerk — talk slower. When you're tense, you speak more rapidly, which changes your body's chemistry and turns you into an F-bomb-dropping machine. Talking at a calmer pace will chill you out, and you'll be more likely to get what you want.

10. Skip the New Year's resolutions. While you might think that giving yourself goals is a positive thing, they'll make you feel inadequate and pressured rather than hopeful and happy. Instead, make some great plans for January.

MOST RIDICULOUS CHRISTMAS DISPLAY

The Faucher Family in Delaware have built extravagant Christmas lights setups for 25 years now. How extravagant? They use 1,000,000 lights. So how much does it cost them to run the lights for a month? $82,320. Gulp.

If the Fauchers use LEDS, their estimate would drop down to $89 hour and $10,680.
